Abstract

Most of Ethiopian sugar factories vehicle maintenance management system is considered as weak activity. For developing and implementing vehicle maintenance management system in the factories can increase their vehicle maintenance effectiveness, reliability by minimizing failure. The main objective of this study is to examine the existing vehicle maintenance of Wonji Shoa Sugar Factory (WSSF) and recommend better maintenance management system that enhances vehicle availability with reasonable maintenance cost. The author believe upon implementation of the recommended maintenance management system, availability of vehicles for transportation and useful life are expected to increase due to minimizing of down time and abuse. A scientific approach to vehicle maintenance management system helps Wonji Shoa Sugar Factory to meet objectives. Vehicle maintenance management system is concerned with the direction and organization of the action to reduce breakdown by better scheduled maintenance, ensuring maximum fuel economy, ensure proper tools, equipment and shop facilities in order to control the availability and performance of factory vehicles. The source of the data for the study are: questioner, unstructured interview, survey of previous relevant works, consultation and personal observation at the case factory, data collection from performance reports, and maintenance log book. By analyzing these data, using table, charts, and diagrams of the research could easily identify what the major problems and their causes to the existing vehicle maintenance management system in Wonji Shoa Sugar Factory. The maintenance can be improved by providing proper training to the vehicle drivers, mechanics and other maintenance workers, on the light of preventive and corrective maintenance philosophy, less downtime of vehicles and low investment of spare parts by recommendations in the maintenance management system development.
