Abstract

ZnO NPs were synthesized by precipitation method from zinc sulphate heptahydrate and zinc nitrate hexahydrate as a precursors with sodiumhydroxide at different annealing temperatures. The synthesised ZnO NPS were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (X-RD), UV-vis Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fluorescence spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) study revealed that the synthesized ZnO product has wurtzite hexagonal structure with the average crystallite size 19.41 - 25.69 nm from zinc sulphate heptahydrate precursor at calcinating temperature of 200 and 400oC respectively. Similarly the average crystallite size of ZnO NPS from zinc nitrate hexhydrate precursors found to be 26.33 - 28.74 nm at calcinating temperature of 400 and 500oC respectively. The SEM images of synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using zinc nitrate hexhydrate precursor at 400 and 500 oC were spherical in shape and agreed with XRD results obtained. The UV absorption peaks were observed at 368 and 377 nm for zinc sulphate heptahydrate and 370 and 378 nm for zinc nitrate hexhydrate respectively. The opticl absorption of ZnO NPS at different annealing temperature indicates red shift as the annealing temperature increses. The fluorescence emission peaks were observed at (392, 399, 396 and 396) nm in UV region and at (449, 464, 474, 519, 521 and 524 ) nm in vissible region. The synthesized ZnO NPs were then applied on cotton and wool samples to impart sunscreen activity to the treated textile. The effectiveness of treatment was assessed using UV–Vis spectroscopy. The ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) and Percent of tranismission (%T) found to be ZnO NPs good UV radiation blockers
