Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between student and family related factors and academic achievement among high school grade nine students in Adama town, East Shewa of Oromia. The sample of this study comprised a total of 201 students (107 females and 94 male) selected by stratified sampling technique from four private high schools. A questionnaire with four scales each with reliability coefficient of 0.733, 0.713, 0.701 and 0.602 was utilized to collect relevant information.Descriptive statistics, Pearson product moment coefficient of correlation , linear regression , t-test and f-test statistical analysis were used with the help of SPSS version 20.Results of this study revealed that there were significant and positive correlation between family climate, study habit , motivation and academic achievement .Nevertheless peer influence was negatively correlated with academic achievement with no significant impact. The finding illustrated the family climate and study habits are variables with strong impact on academic achievement of students .As can be concluded from this study majority of the students had uninvolved families in their learning activities, hadn’t experienced good study habits ,had made wrong peer choices and had been unmotivated towards their education so that stake holders ,educators , professionals and teachers should arrange discussion panels,educational meetings,educate parents,timely communicate with parents about the learning of the child, and students how to select peer friends , how to organize and use their time properly when study and help students to be motivated for learning so as to produce academically successful ,productive and self-reliant citizen for the country.
