Abstract
Hand sanitizer disinfects harmful microorganisms on hand and avoids antagonistic belongings such as itching, annoyance, and dermatitis. The main objective of this paper is formulation of alcohol based and alcohol free polyherbal hand sanitizer. Various essential oils, water and ethanol extracts of Aloe barbaddenis leaf, Citrus aurantifolia dulsis (Lime) leaf, Mentha spictata (spearmint) leaf, Ginger and Ocimum Cufudontii leaf were components of the hand sanitizers instead of synthetic ingredients. Physico-chemical parameters such as pH, viscosity, and foam stability were determined along with antibacterial activity of hand sanitizer on selected strains of microorganisms. The result shows that the formulation exhibit good appearance characteristic as well as the general characterization of the sanitizer proved that the formulations do not show any unpleasant color and odor. The observed anti-bacterial activity results demonstrate that all formulated poly herbal hand sanitizer can inhibited the growth of one or more of the selected pathogenic bacterial species. It was revealed that hand sanitizer formulated with 5% plant extract (HS9 and HS10) showed promising antibacterial activity against Entrococcus feasilis, Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia,E.coli and shigella sonnie. The highest activity was observed for HS9 against Staphylococcus aureus with zone of inhibition 23.33±2.08. when compared to the reference hand sanitizer taken from market that shows anti-bacterial activity against S.auereus only with its zone of inhibition 7±1,the present formulated polyherbal hand sanitizer was more effective which has activity on all the selected pathogens. Thus the observed antibacterial results suggest that effective hand sanitizer can be formulated with the help of plants extracts.
