Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate factors that affect students’ writing skills development. The research approach for the study was a mixed research approach. Data were collected through data collecting tools (instruments) such as students’ questionnaires, teachers and students’ interviews and classroom observation. A sample of 123 respondents were taken using both probability and none probability sampling techniques. The major findings were classified as teacher’s related factors and student’s related factors. Lack of an appropriate approaches and techniques to teach writing, wide range of gap in giving corrective feedback and reinforcements for students’ writing exercises, lack of motivating students’ to practice writing skill, lack of giving an adequate exercises with a sufficient time to practice writing are the teachers related factors. Among the students’ related factors, lack of student’ interest to learn s writing skill, the influence of their first language while they practice writing in using EFL only, lack of their ability to spell words and sentence making are the major ones. Finally the main important points given as the recommendations of this study are: teachers should be selective and should try to investigate the suitable writing skill lessons, frequent and continuous writing skill assessments with adequate writing skill texts should be given with sufficient time and great priority needs to be given for teaching writing skill and talking frequently to students about the importance of writing skill also help a lot in initiating students to practice more particularly to preparatory school level students.
