Abstract

Adama Is One Of The Most Developing Towns In Ethiopia As A Conference And A Tourist Resort Center. Alot Of Construction Work Is Constructed At Present. It Is Also Expected That Much More Construction Is Going To Be Done In The Future. However, Very Little Work Is Done In Investigating The Engineering Properties Of Soils Of Adama Town The Objective Of This Research Was To Determine Index And Compressibility Characteristics Of Soil Found In Adama Town. To Achieve The Objective A Total Of Ten Samples Were Taken From Different Parts Of The Town And Laboratory Tests Were Carried Out.The Laboratory Tests Performed Were Index Test Such As Moisture Content, Sieve Analysis, Atterberg limits, Specific Gravity, Free Swell And Engineering Test That Was One Dimensional Consolidation. One Of The Most Important Engineering Properties Of Soil Is Its Compressibility Characteristics Or Ability To Resist Settlement Along Internal Surfaces Within A Soil Mass. All Stability Analyses In The Field Of Geotechnical Engineering, Whether They Relate To Foundation, Slopes Of Cuts Or Earth Dams, Involve Abasic Knowledge Of This Engineering Property Of The Soils. From The Laboratory Output And ?According To The Unified Soil Classification System, The Soils In Adama Town Are Categorized As Silt And Silty Sand. One-Dimensional Consolidation Tests Show That ?The Are Aunder Investigation Is Over Consolidated In Its Natural State, Meanwhile The Ranges Of Different Properties Is Determined As: Compression Index From 0.33 To 0.40, Recompression Index From 0.017 To 0.066, Coefficient Of Permeability From 10-7 To 10-8 Cm/Sec And Modulus Of Compressibility Ranges From 3920to7500kpa.
