Enhancement Of Maintenance Management For Productivity Improvement: A Case Study On Army Foundation Adama Garment Industry (Afagi)

Abstract

Maintenance Management is an orderly and systematic approach for planning, organizing, monitoring and evaluating maintenance activities and their costs. A good maintenance management system should be coupled with knowledgeable and capable maintenance staff. This will prevent health and safety problems, environmental damages; yields longer asset life with fewer breakdowns; and results in lower operating costs. This research work systematically investigates key factors that negatively affect the effectiveness of maintenance system in Army Foundation Adama Garment industry and improves the maintenance system of the industry through implementation of computer aided maintenance management system. Understanding the significance of maintenance for machineries, equipment and garment product is very crucial. Accordingly the awareness on the importance of scientific approach towards maintenance management system has been created through discussion. The activities lied on understanding of the existing situation of the industry, identification of key factors that affect maintenance system and related problems and how these problems affect productivity are assessed. Based on results of the assessment a new maintenance strategy has been designed using a special computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) maintenance planning and scheduling software called MP Version 9.
