Abstract

This research was conducted to asses Bishoftu condominium dwellers housing satisfaction in four randomly followed by purposively selected condominium sites. The study was intended to address the issue of assessment on residential satisfaction on public low-cost housing based on dwelling unit features, dwelling unit support services, public facilities, social environment and neighborhood facilities. We pointed out 30 housing quality indicators, which were grouped into seven domains to assess satisfaction. Satisfaction was measured using 6- point Likert Scale. Data that came from questionnaires distributed were feed to version 23.00 SPSS computer program and analyzed using descriptive statistics of the mean scores of satisfactions. In addition, qualitative analysis was performed to get in-depth insight about housing opinion. The findings show that a majority of the residents are slightly satisfied, however happiness levels were generally higher for physical space within the housing unit and community facilities, compared to satisfaction with services provided and the social environment within the housing area. It also indicated that the structure quality, stair quality and public facilities provided show significantly higher correlation with overall residential satisfaction with the housing unit. On the other hand, this research finding revealed that the corridor space, room space sufficiency, structure quality, water supply, electricity supply and sanitation system installation have insignificant correlation with the overall satisfaction. The study infers that a new housing policy initiative that provides for the needs and desires of the poor through a change and redirection from fine and untenable housing commencement and development to comprehensive and viable housing initiatives which are embedded in consumer housing needs and desires to address the present massive housing problems in town like Bishoftu.
