Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the major problem encountered in teaching English language in group work at Arerti secondary school grade nine (9) in focus. To achieve the expected learning outcome, descriptive study was employed also it used the three (3) data gathering technique. From 300 students 12.6 % of the total population in fives (5) randomly selected classrooms, and eight (8) English language teachers. The data that collected through the questionnaire were using descriptive statics, frequency and percentage. In addition the information gathered through classroom observation structured, semi structured interview and there were also open ended questioner were employed through qualitatively. As the total information gathered through different techniques shown that: both students and teachers agreed, group work positively. Even if that is true but, still there were so many things were found to be the main problems encountered during group work activities. Since students were not properly took the awareness towards group work at the beginning, this exposed them unable to play their own roles. Some students background in using and practicing English language that results to low level of language proficiency and they intended to use their mother tongue language. By gathering all those problems based on the findings the researcher were made possible recommendations.
