Abstract

Prediction of settlement by classical approach has drawbacks since soil parameters obtained from laboratory test by semi-log plot attributed to scale transformation. The tangent modulus approach, based on arithmetic plot of ε vs. σ‘ and M vs. σ‘, can overcome this drawbacks, and can be used in analyzing nonlinear soil settlement. In this paper, application of tangent modulus approach is verified by introducing and determining parameter for Asela soils. In addition, limitation of the classical approach is justified by examining the outcomes of one dimensional consolidation test results. Results of modulus number ranges from 10 – 20 for normally consolidated portion and 20-50 for over-consolidated portion. Stress exponent is found to be zero for both normally consolidated and over-consolidated portion. The outcomes of analysis justify the limitation of classical approach and prove that the tangent modulus approach has better accuracy of nonlinear settlement computation. Also, it is feasible to obtain tangent modulus parameters from arithmetic plot of M vs. σ‘, which provides an easier way in computing settlement of the soil.
