| dc.description.abstract | The existing teff planter machine had three furrow openers, two hopper divisions for seed and fertilizer, no clutch on the ground wheel to minimize wastage during turning. A project was carried out on design and manufacturing of animal driven teff row planter machine by selecting the best parameters from previous model studies. The machine d e s i g n analysis was made for critical elements of the machine, proper local standard materials were selected, and manufacturing process had been explained for basic machine components. The purpose of this machine is to plant the seed teff and applies fertilizer effectively and uniformly and cheaply in the growth stages of teff. The machine consisted of trapezoidal frame, trapezoidal seed and fertilizer hopper , seed and fertilizer metering device, four furrow openers with depth control provision, ground wheel with chain and sprockets for transmitting power to the metering mechanism, Seed delivery tube, seed covering device and clutch for disengaging power to the drive wheel during turning. The seed and fertilizer hopper was made trapezoidal shape with height of 215 mm, upper side 800×310 mm, bottom side 800×130 mm and made up of steel sheet which includes four sub small sections carrying seed and another four sub small sections carrying fertilizer. The cup feed mechanism was selected for metering teff seeds as there is no seed damage and hence does not affect germination. For fertilizer metering, orifice type mechanism was provided.
