Abstract
This research provides the potentialities and challenges in upgrading informal settlements to
enable sustainable urban development in the study area. It aims to assess the current condition
of the informal settlements, determining the main challenges encountered during the upgrading
process, investigating possibilities for enhancing living conditions, and evaluating sustainable
urban development practice in this context. The significance of this research is that it can
provide key information about the settlement pattern in Ethiopia, a subject that has generally
been deficient. The research would shed light on local policy makers and urban planners on the
unique socio-economic and environmental determinants that shape the lives of people and
inform decisions regarding quality urban development. The scope of study covers the informal
settlements of Cheleleka Sub City and takes into account a number of factors such as standards
in housing, availability of basic services, and community harmony. The research employs a
mixed-methods approach using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to present
a comprehensive picture of the research issues. Primary data are collected through structured
questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions, while secondary data are
collected from published reports and literature. The study employs purposive sampling to select
key informants such as local leaders and representatives of the community, and viewpoints. Data
collection techniques involve main informant interviews to obtain in-depth information,
observation during field visits to assess physical status, and focus group discussions enabling
community participation. Data analysis employs thematic analysis of qualitative data to identify
the most salient themes and patterns, while quantitative data analysis is conducted with the help
of statistical analysis using tools such as SPSS and MS Excel to facilitate a comprehensive
probing of findings.. Later, this thesis aims to clarify the specific challenges faced by Cheleleka's
Sub city informal, existing opportunities for mobilizing resources and community engagement,
and evaluate environmentally friendly urban development strategies that can simplify living. By
providing practical recommendations, the research seeks to guide urban planning practice in
Bishoftu and similar environments towards a sustainable and equitable urban way of life that
meets the needs of its inhabitants and builds resilience to the persistent city problems,
