Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the implementation of student centered learning
approach in EFL classes of Goba Secondary School. To achieve this, specific objectives were set
giving due emphasis on practice and experience of student centered learning approach, teachers
strategies used in the classrooms and those challenges teachers encountered while implementing
student centered learning approach respectively. To conduct the research, a descriptive method
was used. Purposive and systematic techniques were used to select the sample of the population.
Based on these, the data were collected from a total of 66 respondents (60 students and 6
teachers). Data were gathered through classroom observation, questionnaires and interview and
were analyzed using percentage, mean value and descriptive statistics. The finding of the study
revealed that teachers have no clear understanding of student centered learning approach. As a
result their practice was low. Among the student centered learning strategies most teachers used
only discussion, questioning and brainstorming. Some of the challenges teachers encountered
while implementing student centered learning approach were; lack of training, the classroom
conditions, poor instructional facilities, influence of mother tongue and background experience,
having less awareness of teachers and students were found as the challenges that they faced in
implementing student centered learning approach in EFL classrooms. Finally, recommendations
were forwarded based on the major findings so as to facilitate effective implementation of
student centered learning approach.
