Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine whether or not teaching grammar through the integration of form, meaning and use is effective and functional than the structural method. For this purpose, 30 students were selected from grade nine and categorized in to control and study group. The study group was taught grammer with integration of form, meaning and use approach whereas the control group taught grammer with structural approach. Pre test was given for both groups before the beginning of the experimental teaching to check their previous language performance. There were no differences in language performance between the two groups. By the end of the experimental teaching, post test exam was given and the result was collected and analyzed. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-test were used to compute and analyze the post test results of the two groups. The mean score for study group was 86.33±5.92 whereas the mean score for control group was 62.6±6.915. There were statistically significant difference between study group and control group in essay writing type of questions, sentence construction and completion questions (p = 0.000) whereas there was no statistically significant difference between study and control group in comprehension and multiple choice questions (p- value 0.303 and 0.171, respectively).
