Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess why grade 9 Students unable to constructing Sentences and how they able to construct sentences.The study employed a descriptive case study method. For this study the data were collected by using questionnaires, interview, and test. The data were collected from 93 grade nine students who were selected randomly, and 12 English teachers were chosen purposefully. The research was conducted in Adama Secondary School. Then, the data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings of the study showed, Students couldn’t construct even simple sentences because of the following factors. Lack of background knowledge on writing skill,not had willingness to practice the given writing activities. For this reason majority 0f grade nine students had problems of constructing sentences. Besides, they couldn’t identify complete and incomplete sentences. The students also couldn’t change active to passive form of sentences; they couldn’t use theappropriate tenses in their sentences, they couldn’t utilize the coordinative conjunctions in their own sentences etc. The conclusion made from the study was that Grade 9 students had great problems to construct sentences. Therefore, it is recommended that learners and teachers play great role for writing skill. Teachers encourage students to exercise writing, and follow up their works in detail by providing feedbacks. So teachers should play their role effectively and implement the writing activities as much as possible. In the same way students alsoshould give attention to the writing activity.
