Abstract

The main objective of this study was assessing the practice of teaching writing skills grade ten in EFL classes. Arsi Ngele Kilturea Secondary School in focus .To achieve the objective,120 grade ten students were selected systematic sampling based alphabetical order, and all English teachers purposively were selected .Data were gathered using questionnaire ,interview and classroom observation. The questionnaire was distributed to 120 students and 5 English teachers. The observation was conducted to two sessions on voluntary basis. The questionnaire was used to find out the efforts of students to develop their practice and participate of writing skills and the role of teachers in helping learners how to teach writing skills .To know the constancy of the results , interview was conducted. The observation was conducted to see the classroom participation and practices they occur. The results obtained through these tools reveled that most of the students did not participate and did not practice writing skills in the class and outside the classes. Teachers also did not give attention for writing skills and did not use different teaching writing techniques .Finally, based on the findings, recommendations were for warded. The teachers should carry out their rolls in helping learners to practice and participate during writing skills. The students should exert individual and group efforts to participate and practice writing skills.
