Abstract

This study attempted to explore Jinka Preparatory School Students listening comprehension skill and investigated the problems whether they were teacher related, student related and techniques used to present the listening lessons in the classroom teaching. Total population of the study was 735 students and 4 English Language Teachers .Among these population, ninety one students from grade 11 and grade 12 were selected by using systematic random sampling techniques and administered close ended questionnaires and collected data . Similarly, ninety-eight students from the same grade level were selected by using simple random sampling techniques and conducted classroom observation and four English Language Teachers who were currently teaching English Language at Jinka Preparatory School were selected purposive sampling techniques. and conducted open ended questionnaire, To implement the study, data were collected by using close ended questionnaires; classroom observation by using classroom observation check lists and open ended questionnaires were administered to English Language teachers and collected data from their teaching experiences. The close ended questionnaires were administered to ninety one students and their responses were tabulated and coded in the tables and changed in to percentage and were analyzed. The open ended questionnaires were administered to four English Language teachers and their responses were descriptively analyzed using short description summary notes. Then, the researcher conducted classroom observation three times and two times respectively on the selected sections of grade 11 and grade 12 and descriptive analysis were employed according to the observation checklists.. Data analysis results have showed that even if teachers have attempted to employ theories of teaching listening comprehension at the classroom situation, the learner‘s attitudes, the learner‘s background profiles and the experience level of teachers determine its appropriate implementation of teaching listening sub skills at the classroom setting. Finally, practical workshops and seminars for teachers to maximize the experience gap of teaching listening and awareness making discussions to the learners on the benefits of learning listening comprehension should be prepared to minimize problems that the students always used to reveal resistance in learning listening lessons in the normal classroom situations.
