Abstract
The main purpose of this research was to assess reading strategies used by successful and unsuccessful readers in EFL Classes: the case of grade nine students in Chole Secondary School. To achieve this objective, a descriptive survey research type was employed. 110 students were selected purposively from grade 9 to participate in the study. Questionnaire and interview were used to collect data. Then, the collected data were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods of data analysis. The findings showed that the more successful readers use reading strategies more frequently than the unsuccessful readers. There was a relationship between reading strategies use and reading comprehension achievement. Having understood the importance of reading strategies for understanding a written text and academic success, teachers should consider this issue and give special support to unsuccessful reader students to use different kinds of reading strategies like the successful readers in order to comprehend a written text. Moreover, unsuccessful readers should give attention to learn reading strategy instruction and use reading strategy to meet the intended reading objectives and to understand a written text.
