Abstract
Abattoirs are one important urban functions that need suitable site to be compatible with the
Surrounding geographic features. However, they are observed being located at in appropriate site
posing environmental hazard to their surrounding and are additionally influenced by some
adjacent activities. The present study was conducted to find the most suitable abattoir site in
shashamane town. In order to do this it was discovered essential to experience the national urban
planning establishment of Ethiopia, and thus reviewing the experience of urban land use planning
for sitting basic environmental issues like abattoir. An integrated Remote sensing and GIS
approach was observed to be extremely useful to assign abattoir site in the study area. Factors
that were found to be significant in distinguishing the site in the study area were; land use/cover,
elevation, slope, streams, distance from the roads, distance from the high tension lines, distance
from social services, distance from industrial areas, and boreholes. These factors were weighted
in hierarchical order using MCE approach to produce the suitability map of abattoir site. From
the overall suitability map, suitability level of areas was calculated. Major findings of the study
revealed that, 12.46% of the study area covers a highly suitable area of abattoir, 22.91% area
is suitable, 16.70% of areas is moderately suitable and the unsuitable area covers 47.93% of
the study area. The highly suitable areas are mainly located in the south west, west and north
of the study area. These areas falls in bare land uses. The suitable areas are located near the
periphery of built up areas. Finally, the unsuitable areas site are located in the developed part
of the town. Generally, locating the abattoir within highly suitable area can ensure minimizing
the impact of abattoir on the surrounding environment in the form of liquid wastes, solid
waste, airborne wastes and noise : reducing the impact of nearby activities on the abattoir through
dust and smoke emitting industries.
