Abstract

Highly Plastic Clayey Soil (CH) Are Widely Used Materials For The Construction Of Impervious Core Of Zoned Embankment Dams As They Are Very Economical And Can Be Easily Found In Large Part Of The Earth Surface As A Weathering Product Of Parent Rocks.? In Ethiopia, In Most Of Previously Constructed (E.G. Tendaho, Kesem, Koga, Ribb, Megech And Maqa Dam) And Under Construction (E.G. Gidabo Dam) Embankment Dams, Ch Soils From Different Part Of The Country Are Used As A Core Material. However, Such Soil Is Characterized By High Compressibility, Poor Shear Strength When Compacted And Saturated, Difficult In Moisture Control During Construction (Poor Workability) And Requires Slow Rate Of Construction To Allow Dissipation Of Excess Pore Water Pressure, Which Make It Undesirable As Impervious Core Material.? The Present Study Has Been Conducted To Alter Undesirable Characteristics Of Ch Soil Using Hydrated Lime (Ca (Oh) 2) And Make It Suitable Material For Core Of Embankment Dam. To Achieve The Objective, Six Soil Samples From Gidabo Dam Area Were Collected And Different Laboratory Tests Were Conducted. The Work Was Divided Into Two Sections. The First Section Deals With The Characterization Of The Index And Engineering Properties Of The Soils, And The Second Section Deals With Stabilization Of The Soils With Hydrated Lime. Generally, Hydrated Lime (Ca (Oh) 2) Can Be A Potential Alternative To Alter The Undesirable Characteristics Of Highly Expansive Clayey Soil (I.E. High Swelling And Shrinkage Potential, High Compressibility, Poor Workability, Etc.) And Make It Suitable Material For Core Of Embankment Dam .
