Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to assess reading strategies awareness and use in the case of grade 10 students at Kersa Secondary School. Out of the total 845 (male 426, female 419) students of grade 10, 10% were selected using purposive sampling method. The questionnaire which consisted of 57 items was distributed for 85 students (male 45, female 40) of grade 10 in one government school found in Oromia Region, Arsi Zone.To get the desired outcome, the researcher used descriptive research design which makes use of mixed method, quantitative and qualitative research design. Seven (7) students and three (3) English teachers were interviewed. The data from the interview was qualitatively analyzed, and the data from close and open ended questionnaire were analyzed using frequency and percentage. The findings indicated that students get awareness on strategy of reading and also teachers get used of the necessary strategy of reading in teaching reading.It is also recommended that more research is needed to investigate the similarities and differences between awareness use in using reading strategies to arrive at more reliable conclusions.Further research should assess why learners and teachers dominantly use and teach some reading strategies respectively.Additionally, the results indicated that negative use of the given strategies by the participantsdue to the less use of the Meta cognitive reading strategies and also due to the ineffective participation of teachers in teaching reading strategies.
