Abstract
Color is one of the most important factors in the attractiveness and marketability of textile
products. Until recently, the majority of cotton garments were colored using synthetic dyes like
reactive, acid, etc., which are typically not good to the environment. This study focuses on
extracting natural dyes from Ansosila root and identifies eco-friendly methods for dyeing cotton
fabrics. Aqueous extraction was used to extract natural coloring pigments. Impatiens tinctoria
was used as a bio-based dye to color cotton garments. In order to improve the dyeing strength,
dyeing experiments were conducted both chemical-free and employing salts of metals including
iron, aluminium, and copper. The maximum absorption peak showed at 445nm. Functional
groups that correspond to phenolic compounds associated with –OH (3390 cm
−1
), C-O (1047
cm
−1
), olefinic (alkene) associated with trans-C-H out-of-plane bend (959 cm−1
), aromatic ring
(aryl) group related to C=C-C aromatic ring stretch (1598 cm−1
), primary and secondary amino
group (1598 cm−1
), vinyl C-H in-plane bend vibration is attributed to the band at 1419 cm−1 and
common inorganic sulfate ion (1116 cm−1
) were all able to be identified through FT-IR analysis.
The color fastness qualities of extracted coloring compounds were used to evaluate their dyeing
performance. The findings were good and the dye displayed a darker shades. The outcome also
demonstrates that cotton fabrics colored with the same dye extract but with various types of
mordants produced fabrics with a variety of colors. The mordanting mechanism of the extracted
dye was also proposed. Fastness values ranging from good to excellent were noted (3-5).
Fortunately, unmordanted fabric showed unusual very good fastness performances. Mordanting
with FeSO4 showed better fastness performances. All the fastness performance test results were
in commercially acceptable range. Given that the dyes outstanding color fastness, it is
recommended that natural dyes derived from Ansosila root can be used well as coloring agents
for cotton fabrics.
