Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to identify the impacts of large class size on the implementation of student-centered learning approach. In line with this, the intention of the study was particularly to identify challenges that both teachers and students encounter while they attempt to practice student centered learning approach due to large class size. The study was conducted in Ginnir preparatory school. In order to execute this study, the researcher applied quasi experiment. In doing so, two groups of students (one large group composed of 60 students) and the other (one small group composed of 20 students) were selected. Both groups took similar pre- written tests on Grammar, Speaking skills, Reading skills and writing skills. . The results of each group of students were coded and registered. Each of group of the students was taught similar course for 18 weeks (from February-June 2017.) Finally each group was given similar post- tests on the same languages skills. The differences of the tests were computed. During the class-room observation, factors such as the participation level of students, class-room discipline, class-room management, time management, group work and individual student arrangement were observed. The result indicated that the students in smaller group have shown better achievement than those who were learnt in large group in all tests. Furthermore, the learning atmosphere in small class size is by far better than those in large class size. Depending on the findings of the study, conclusions were drawn and some recommendations were given.
