The data were collected through questionnaire, key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and field visit observations. The collected quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistics whereas the qualitative data were analyzed through simple description, narration and interpretation of the situations. The assessment of the study revealed that the present status of green areas in the study woreda06 inadequate both in quantity and quality besides the lack of proper management and development. This is because there is low level of public awareness about the values, low level of public participation, poor implementation of government policies (rules and regulations), lack of enough budget, lack of skilled manpower, illegal settlements, problem of co-ordination and integration among different stakeholders, shortage of urban land areas and lack of political leader’s commitment. Following the assessment the study was forwarded the following recommendations; open and green space must be planned as use in its own right, the municipality should uprising awareness, set rule, regulations and by-laws with the participation of the whole population, the municipality should set specified standard of green space per capital for the inhabitant while ensuring it’s sustainable development, the benefits and values of green urban areas should be demonstrated in terms of economic valuation, and engaged in the green areas development and management practice with the sense of ownership.
