An Investigation Into The Practice Of Grade Nine Students’ Oral Communication In Efl Class: Biriti Secondary School In Focus.

Abstract

The primary aim of the study was to investigate into the Practice of Grade Nine Students’ Oral Communication in Biriti Secondary School. Specifically, the study was intended to examine students’ oral communication’, identify the attitudes of students towards oral communication, search out the causes of students’ oral communication problem. To attain the objectives of the study, a descriptive survey method was used and the data were gathered via questionnaire, classroom observation, interviews and content analysis. Open-ended and closed ended questionnaire was distributed to the sample students and semi- structured interview questions were used with the available English teachers and the selected students. Observation was also used based on checklists and chosen criteria according to the objective of the study. Based on the data collected through the above mentioned instruments and its analysis and interpretation, the findings of the study showed that both teachers and students have their own shortcomings in applying the concept of oral communication practically. The study further showed that teachers’ method of teaching is lecture method and teacher centered way of teaching, students’ fear of making mistakes, lack of real life oral communication activities were the main problems that slow down students’ oral communication. Finally, based on the implication of the findings, recommendations were made for language teachers, students and the concerned bodies to overcome the learners’ oral problems.
