Abstract
Chalcones are a class of open chain flavonoids that are linked by a three carbon spacer between two aromatic rings. Chalcones and their heterocyclic analogues enjoy a range of biological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, cytotoxic, anticancer, antiprotozoal, antihistaminic, antiulcer and anti-inflammatory activities. In this project, a series of chalcones derivatives and flavonoids were synthesized by green synthesis protocol using zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles as catalyst. The structures were characterized by spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR spectra, 1H, 13C and DEPT-135 NMR spectra). The synthesized chalcones has been screened for their antibacterial activities against (E coli S.aureus , P.aeroginosa and K. Pneumonia ) and the result revealed that chalcones 42 and 43 are active on against S. aureus (13 and 11mm zone of inhibition) whereas flavonones 44 and 45 showed promising activity against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively, with zone of inhibition of 10 mm for respective strains
