Abstract

The present study aims to investigate grade 12 teachers and students classroom listening practice in line with the new textbook in Abyot Kirs Preparatory School in Addis Ababa. Moreover, it examines whether listening sections were being neglected or not; and it, in the meantime, tries to find out whether the contents in the text include topics that focus on what learners need to know and be able to do in real life, and whether or not students follow up listening lessons attentively. The study also sought to assess whether or not teachers use strategies of teaching listening. The subjects of the study were grade 12 English language teachers and 134 Students of Abyot Kirs Preparatory School. The instruments used in the study were questionnaire, classroom observation and content analysis. The study confirmed that teachers do not teach listening sections regularly. It also revealed that not all the teachers employ the strategies of teaching listening that are suggested by the course designers. The study recommends that the course book should include visual supports of VCD and DVD that integrate authentic inputs so as to expose the students to real-life listening and appeal their interest.
