Abstract

Waterfront Development Plays A Crucial Role In Promoting Economic Growth And Social Transformation In Various Regions Worldwide. In Ethiopia, Lake Hawassa's Waterfront Development Has The Potential To Create Jobs, Stimulate Tourism, And Enhance The Quality Of Life For Residents. However, The Lake's Environment Has Been Degraded Due To Rapid Urbanization, Population Growth, And Unregulated Waste Disposal. Therefore, This Study Aims To Evaluate The Current State Of Lake Hawassa's Waterfront Development And Suggest Strategic Alternatives To Improve Livability And Urban Tourism. To Achieve The Study's Objectives, Both Quantitative And Qualitative Methods Were Employed. A Total Of 392 Questionnaire Surveys Were Conducted Using Purposive And Simple Random Sampling Techniques. The Survey Data Analyzed Existing Waterfront Features In Relation To Physical, Functional, Economic, Political, Environmental, And Cultural Aspects Based On The Observation Method. Additionally, GIS Software Was Utilized To Examine The Relationship Between Land Use And Waterfront Changes Within A Ten-Year Interval, And The Current Potential Of Urban Tourism Was Assessed Using A Likert Scale Questionnaire And Spss With Descriptive And Inferential Data Analysis Technique Based On The Waterfront Development Principles. The Study Identified Numerous Problems With The Existing Waterfront Conditions, Including Accessibility, Facilities And Amenities, Safety And Security, Pollution, And The Presence Of Local Businesses In The Main Waterfront Corridor, Which Negatively Impacts Attractiveness. Moreover, There Were Significant Changes In Land Use Over The Years, Including Increased Settlements Around The Lake And Decreased Forest And Water Areas. Consequently, Unplanned Land Use Development Has Resulted In Various Issues Related To Improper Land Uses. The Study Revealed That The Area Faced Challenges In Terms Of Waterfront Development Principles Such As Cultural Protection, Creative Environment, Innovation And Technology, Functional Diversity, Entrepreneurship Promotion, Quality Of Life And Physical Comfort, Social Cohesion, Economic Contribution, And Awareness. The Study Highlighted Each Waterfront Development Principle's Impact Factor And Provided A Comprehensive Understanding Of Existing Problems. Based On The Findings, The Study Proposes Strategic Recommendations And Design Interventions For Various Waterfront Development Aspects And Principles. It Is Crucial To Consider The Existing Waterfront Conditions, Land Use Relations, And The Current State Of Urban Tourism. An Inclusive, Resilient, And Vibrant Waterfront Can Be Achieved By Meeting The Diverse Needs And Perspectives Of All User Groups And Making Efficient Use Of Existing Resources. This Benefits The City, Its People, And The Environment.
