Abstract
Sustainable development aims to foster healthier living environments and enhance quality
of life by balancing environmental, social, and economic considerations. While the
construction industry is pivotal in advancing sustainability, it faces substantial challenges,
particularly in adopting new technologies and transitioning from conventional to
sustainable practices. In Hargeisa, Somaliland, many modern buildings often did not reflect
local environmental and cultural contexts, with construction practices frequently influenced
by foreign architectural styles and materials unsuitable for the local climate, leading to less
sustainable and comfortable structures. This study assessed the challenges hindering the
adoption of green building practices and identified green building rating attributes with
contextual relevance to Hargeisa. A mixed-methods research design was employed,
combining quantitative data from 105 survey respondents with qualitative insights from
expert interviews. The findings indicated that high initial costs, a lack of awareness among
clients and investors, and insufficient professional expertise were the major barriers to
implementing green building principles. The study also found that many internationally
recognized green building rating attributes were perceived as relevant and potentially
applicable in the local context. Based on this analysis, the study recommended improving
awareness and education, strengthening government support, and developing localized
green building standards to facilitate sustainable construction practices in Hargeisa.
