Urbanization refers to a growth in the proportion of a population living in urban areas and the further physical expansion of already existing urban centres. In our country Ethiopia Until very recently, there are more than 925 urban centres at different growth stages in the country and the annual urban population growth rate was estimated to be above 4.3% (Mowed, 2006). The problems are cooperated with urban expansion are Urban Sprawl, Housing, Unemployment, Transport, Water, Sewerage Problems. Adama city is also highly affected by urban Expansion. The main objectives of this study were Assessing impact of urban expansion on peri-urban communities and LULC change in Adama City. To achieve the objective of this research secondary data like satellite images (Landsat 5-TM, 7-ETM+, and 8-Oli with spatial resolution of 30m, master plan and population data are collected from concerned sources. Primary data such as, house hold survey, interviews and ground survey were collected. Spatial analysis of LULC change analysis was done by GIS and ERDAS imagine while household survey, and socioeconomic data were analysed using SPSS. The finding of the study shows that during study period 1992 to 2022 urban/built up area of the town has significantly expanded by 15.50 percent against agricultural land loss of 14.55 percent over the study period. This indicates that there was a major land use/land cover change of the city with the agricultural land lost to built-up area being the dominant one. The built-up area has been expanding in all directions during the study period consuming land from the other land uses in and around the city. On the other hand, increase in non farm job opportunities and infrastructure development in the study areas are notable. Finally, the urban expansion brought a significant negative impact on the livelihood elements of the peri-urban agricultural community as this study examined. Therefore, this study had assessed and found that the horizontal urban expansion has adversely affected the financial, social, natural, physical and human capital of the peri-urban agricultural community’s livelihood.en_US
