Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate factors affecting students motivation to learn English. This was because students at Digelu Secondary School were seemed to have a weak motivation to learn English. The focus was to assess what factors affected students motivation to learn English and how teachers did try to motivate their students and what were the activities teachers use to motivate their students. The study was conducted in Digelu Secondary School which is found in Oromia Region Arsi Zone Digelu and Tijo Woreda. To attain this objective the researcher employed mixed research method and gathered quantitative and qualitative data from 2 English teachers and 100 grade 9 students using interview and questionnaire respectively. The 2 teachers were availably taken where as the 100 students were selected using simple random sampling from 496 grade 9 students. The quantitative data was analyzed comparing and contrasting the percentage and frequency of the response given. The major findings of the study were emerged from three sources such as students, teachers and parents that were not working well together to improve the learning and teaching of English. Thus, they were recommended to work hard cooperatively to improve students motivation to learn English.
