Abstract

In The Road Construction Sector, Several Performance Problems And Target Deviations Of Construction Projects Are Observed. Properly Measuring Performance By Integrating The Necessary Measures And Methods Can Aid To Identify The Performance Problems And Take Corrective Action. This Study Was Conducted To Identify The Performance Challenges For Contractors In Road Construction Projects For The Case Of West Arsi Zone. A Desk Study, Questionnaire Survey, Case Study, And Literature Review Were Employed To Collect Primary And Secondary Data. For This Purpose, 78 Different Challenges Were Identified And Categorized Into Eight (8) Major Group Factors, During The Literature Review And Analyzed By Relative Importance Index And Correlation Analysis Using The Ms-Excel. Based On The Data Collected From The Samples And Questionnaire Analyzed, The Identified Challenges Were Examined By Construction Stakeholders. Accordingly The Results Shows That The Major Performance Challenges That Most Frequently Occurs Were Cost With Rii (0.78), Time With Rii(0.74) ,Client Satisfaction(0.72) And Quality(0.71). The Critical Factors That Affect Performance Of Contractors In Road Construction Project Have Been Cost, Quality And Time. From The Analysis And Discussions Made The Top Three Key Performance Indicators With Combined Rii Were Cost (0.82), Time (0.80) And Quality (0.76) And It??S Hoped That These Findings Were Guide Efforts To Improve The Performance Of The Construction Industry In The Future. The Case Study Was Conducted On Selected Road Projects As Control Values To Assess How Many Of The Projects Were Affected By The Identified Challenges Using Archival Documents And Discussion With Participants On The Project Site. In This Research Study The Top Five Remedial Measures For Project Performance Challenges Are: Meets Technical Specification And Competent And Capable Of Client??S Representative, Commitment To Projects, Proper Project Planning And Scheduling, Proper Emphasis On Past Experience, Comprehensive Contract Documentation And Community Involvement, Complete And Accurate Project Feasibility Study Respectively. The Result Reveals That, From Four Projects Selected For Case Study, One Project Were In Critical Condition That Needed Immediate Attention And Intervention. Stakeholders Are Recommended To Develop Application Of Health And Safety Factors And Awareness Of Workers On The Advantages And Usage Of Safety Equipment??S And Minimize Waste Rate Through Project Implementation In Order To Improve Cost Performance.
