Abstract

D. stramonium (Solanaceae) is a plant distributed throughout most parts of tropical regions of the oromia. The plant is a noxious weed cultivated cereal crops which is traditionally used for the treatment of various diseases. The aim of this study was to isolate, purify and characterize the bioactive principle from the seeds of the plant. In this regard the air dried seeds was extracted with methanol to afford 12g (9.6%) solid. The extract was subjected to silica gel column chromatography which led to the isolation of 1-naphthalene aldehyde as a yellow crystalline solid. The structure of this compound was elucidated based on various spectroscopic methods including IR, 1H- NMR, 13C-NMR, and DEPT-135.
