Abstract

Agriculture accounts for the majority of economic development in many developing countries, including Ethiopia. Agricultural machinery is a necessary component for modernizing agriculture, and without modernized agriculture, the country would not be modernized. Many farm households in the Oromia region particularly, the East Wallaga zone are still unable to feed themselves, and the agricultural machinery and implements, availability, utilization and factors hindering are not studied in the study area. Based on these issues, the study sought to investigate the current availability, utilization, and the influencing factors, of agricultural machinery and impairments in the study area. Various strategies were utilized to attain the study's goal. Descriptive-statistics research approach was employed, and structured questionnaires were developed. Data were obtained from purposively selected woredas and kebeles in the study area, a total of 380 respondents, contacted from which 360 are farmers and 20 of them are experts from zones, woredas, and DAs. MS Excel 2016 was used for data coding and entry and SPSS version 29 was used for data analysis. To investigate characteristics related to the availability and utilization of agricultural machinery, descriptive statistics were used. According to the study's findings, capital, cost, a lack of suppliers, productivity, a lack of replacement parts, and maintenance service may all have a significant impact on the availability and usage of machinery. Lack of credit access, lack of capital, cost unaffordability, lack of government consideration, and Absence of brokers were factors that affect the availability of Agricultural machinery. Whereas topography, land size, the goal of production, productivity, absence of service provider, and family size were factors that affect the utilization of agricultural machinery. Participants who had primary and blow education levels were 49%, who had above primary education were 5% and no negative effect shown on the availability and utilization regarding the educational level. There was significant difference between productivity of farmers who technology utilizes and non-user by (35%). Agricultural machinery is an ideal technology that facilitate modern farming system so that further studies will conduct to improve the availability of appropriate machinery based on land size and topography as well utilization of the technology for small-scale farming.
