Abstract

In this research, the refractive index of sodium chloride solution was determined using a Michelson interfermetric technique. In this experiment three lasers of wave length 532nm, 633nm and 650nm were used. Sodium chloride solution was used as sample and the solutions were prepared in mass fraction (m/m). The calculated refractive index of NaCl solutions were found to vary with concentration, temperature and wavelength. The refractive index increases as the concentration of sodium chloride solution increases. Also the temperature dependent of refractive index of the sodium chloride solution were determined; and the result indicates that, as the temperature increases the refractive index of the solutions decrease. In addition, the wavelength dependent of refractive index of the solution was determined; and the result indicates that the refractive index of sodium chloride solution decrease exponentially as the wavelength of light increases Thus, the developed method can be used as an alternative method to check quality of transparent liquid solution.
