Assessing The Causes And Impacts Of Youth Antisocial And Violent Behavior; The Case Of Eteya Secondary School

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to identify the major causes and impacts of youth antisocial and violent behavior in Eteya secondary school. Descriptive survey research method was used. The stratified random sampling technique was employed; this will give each members of the population an equal probability of being selected. The population in the study consisted of 900 students and 42 teachers Eteya secondary school, in Oromia Regional state Government, Arsi Zone, Hetosa Woreda. Based on the sampling plan proposed in the study, a random sample of 269 students and 37 teachers were drawn. The main data gathering instruments/tools used for this study were questionnaire and interview. The major statistical tools used in this study were, frequency, percentage, t-test, multiple regressions, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient, mean and standard deviation. The findings of this study showed that various factors such as school, teacher, family, student and environmental related are the major causes for youth’s antisocial and violent behaviors in the school. The findings of this study indicated that a significant positive correlation between youth antisocial behavior and all risk factors that were hypothesized in the study with varying magnitude of correlation coefficient. The study finding indicated that there was no statistical significant different in youth antisocial and violent behaviors’ attitudes/opinion between male and female respondents. Multiple regression analysis results also showed that youth antisocial behavior can be predicted by school, teacher, family, student and environmental related factors. The study also examined the major causes for the students violent at secondary school levels and then forwarded possible ways of recommendations.
