Abstract
The main objective of this study is to assess the perceived role of teachers and students on using authentic materials in speaking classroom in grade twelve. This study is mainly concerned with assessing the role of authentic materials, the perception of students and learners, the role of teachers and students play in speaking classes and problems related to authentic materials in teaching and learning speaking skills. To achieve the stated objectives, an instrument like questionnaires, classroom observation and an interview were used to gather the required data.The data were categorized and descriptively analyzed. The finding showed that authentic materials were not properly used to enhance the speaking skills of the learners. On the other hand the role of teachers and students in improving speaking skills of the learners found to be low. Teachers were observed that they rarely encourage the students to participate in the classroom and practice the speaking skills outside the classroom in their real life. This leads to weak performance of the learners in using the language inside and outside the classroom. Finally this research paper provides recommendation that could bring about a change about the implementation of authentic materials in teaching and learning speaking skills
