Abstract
In a global arena urban planning and design have proven to be important field in determining
life styles, solving problems and giving new ways of living in the urban environment. High
quality of urban life can be realized through good urban environment and this quality of urban
environment can be achieved through different mechanism in the urban planning and design,
from which creating quality public realm with harmonious built environment is very important
among others and take the lion share. Pedestrian, quantitative and qualitative measurement of
how inviting or un-inviting an area to pedestrians matters more and more to towns and cities
as the connection between walking and socially vibrant neighbourhoods is becoming clearer.
Built environments that promote and facilitate walking to stores, work, school and amenities
are better places to live, promote healthier lifestyles and have higher levels of social cohesion.
However planning for non-motorized transport have not been get equal emphasis as motorized
transport. The general objective of the research is to analyse the problem of automobile
oriented development by setting Pedestrian measurement tool with relate to urban design and
come up with design solution which can be a base for other similar corridor which enhance
healthy public life, social life and economy in Jima road station. Which is characterized by a
mix of freight areas and residential area. Realizing this fact this study has tried to assess the
situation of the existing Pedestrian of a case study area. It deeply analysed the case study area
using quantitative and qualitative data collected from primary and secondary data resource
through observation, traffic count, pedestrian survey, key informant interview and collected
report from different institution. Then those data‘s analysed through different parameters with
the help of GIS, Excel and CAD. Then the analysed data presented by maps, tables and figures.
Those analyses led to certain findings which show the road segment is not walkable and need
an intervention. In order to solve the observed problems and develop walkable corridor that
meet the feature coming development to the sub-city the research provides different
recommendation and design solution.
