Abstract
The purpose of this study is to empirically assess current status, trend and challenges of the
Advanced Manufacturing Technology transfer and implementation in Ethiopian
Manufacturing companies particularly in Metal and Metal engineering sector and finally aimed
to develop an integrated framework/model to facilitate successful implementations of advanced
manufacturing technologies.
To achieve the above purpose, qualitative and Quantitative research methods were used. A
survey was conducted on sample of 29 industries under Basic metal and engineering sector.
An instrument used to collect data were personal interview based purpose designed
questionnaires. The data collected from the surveyed industries where analysed using
descriptive statistics using SPSS software.
The study reveal that the level of implementation of Advanced manufacturing technologies
(AMTs) in Ethiopian Basic metal and Engineering sector was very low with the investment
levels at mean of 1.58 in five point scale of 1 to 5. Among surveyed AMTs, CAD are the most
popular AMT in all industry, almost 96.6% of BMEIs use CAD. The important reason found
to introduce the AMT in BME industry were to increase/maintain market share and desire to
introduce a new product to existing markets. In addition to this the study also reveal that quality,
delivery performance and performance of design are found the most important competitive
priority to introduce AMTs among the surveyed competitive priority. On other hand the
identified manufacturing parameter considered as important reason to introduce AMTs were
found to be to improve average order quality Level (A.O.Q.L) of product, ability to design and
manufacture new product, standardization of component tooling, reduction of change overtime,
etc. The study also found that distance from supplier of technologies, lack of workforce,
management little experience about AMT is the main challenges that hindered the technology
transfer in Ethiopian BMEIs. From the study, it was also found that continuous management
commitment, need to revise policies and procedure, degree of financial support, clear vision
and objective, identifying the technology which the strategy requires, need to recognize the
organizational structure, selection of vendor based on planned strategy, employee motivation,
employee relation and cooperation, existence of an employee education & training program
prior to implementation, safety of performing job, and need for team members to be familiar
with the new technology, degree of availability of skill manpower, understanding the potential
contribution of AMT to current operation is the key factor for successful implementations of
AMT. Based on the above results from the survey the integrated planning framework was
developed to facilitate the successful implementations of advanced manufacturing
technologies.
Based on the aforementioned findings of the research, it is recommended by the researcher that
the shortcomings identified should be taken into consideration in order to achieve a benefits
obtained from advanced manufacturing technologies by successfully transferring and
implementing AMT to manufacturing industries.
