Abstract

Minimization of line losses and the improvement of power quality in distribution system is the most challenging problems, particularly when it needs capital cost to upgrade the entire feeder systems. A simplified loop distribution system is taken as the object and the main reasons leading to the power loss in the feeder are analysed in this thesis. This thesis work presents a method to achieve the line loss minimization condition and improve power quality in a loop distribution system using Unified Power Flow Controllers (UPFC), one of the most important FACTS devices. First, the line loss minimization conditions in distribution system is present for regulating voltage and to minimize losses in distribution system then this load voltage regulation is applied in the system to improve the power quality. Thinking about the power control function of the unified power flow controller, the control system for the series side of the unified power flow controller is designed based on the voltage control method. Reference voltage of the controlled node is determined based on the assumptions that this voltage can subsequently improve all node voltages to be with in the permissible range and it control that the system insets a series voltage into the controller line and produces a power, which is in the same direction with the power of the controlled line and equals to the loop power of the loop system in quantity. Then the power loss is decreased by eliminating the loop current in the distribution system. Simulations in the loop distribution systems take place by two feeders with different line loss values and the results verified the function of UPFC designed in this thesis for reducing the power loss of the distribution system.
