Abstract

The study sought to investigate the challenges in implementation of group work in EFL classroom. The study was conducted in Yemane Senior Secondary Schoolgrade 11 in focus with a population of five English teachers and 118 students.To achieve the intended goal, the study has used descriptive study design.All 118 students of the two sections were selected as sampling using purposive sampling technique because they are small in number. A total of 118 students responded to the questionnaire, all five English teachers responded to the interview and 4 classroom observations were observed. Triangulation involved in different research instruments like, questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations. 26 closed ended and one open ended questionswere administered to all sample students using purposing sampling. In addition, interview was used with five English teachers and six questions were admistered using semi-structured types of interview.The data for the study was collected using quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. Data obtained through the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean values, grand mean percentage and frequency. The finding of this research revealed that theteachers and the students had obstacles toward the implementation of group in English language classrooms. Based on the data gained it is concluded that classroom setting , class size, contents of the material, students and teachers related factors were among the main challenges that faced in implementation of group work in EFL classroom. It is recommended that teachers of English should incorporate group work activities in their teaching strategies by taking all necessary preparations.
