Abstract

This study analyses the psychosocial impact of NGO said with particular focus on Dugda Woreda community. Waiting for the aid from a donor leads the community to dependency syndrome. To assess the impact of aid on the community the researcher employed qualitative research methods and various techniques were used to collect and analyze data. Focus group discussions with project beneficiaries, and individual project participants, and key informant interview were used to collect the data. The focus group discussions and interviews were guided by interview schedules with respective respondents. Purposive sampling methods were used to choose the respondents as well as groups that participated in the study. This research purely relied on qualitative data analysis techniques. All the data collected were coded and arranged according to the research themes and analyzed based on the research questions and participants response .Finally, the finding indicated that the two NGOs had to a limited extent facilitated the process of enabling, on average 2 out of 5 project beneficiaries to improve and provide for their own social and economic welfare needs. While on average 3/5 project beneficiaries are still needs help to meet their own social and economic needs. This dependency syndrome has further suppressed, the entrepreneurship potentials among local communities, and instead created a regular demand to be helped just as others were helped. Even though some projects scale up the social interaction of the targeted communities but they are not sustainable enough to bring significant change in the life of the community. The donors and NGOs have to Improve Access of Services to Target Communities as well as to promote community involvement at all stages, i.e., planning, implementation and monitoring. To provide for sustainability of the projects implemented the NGOs should change their method of operation. The government has to improve government policies relating to NGO operations. The communities have to develop the self help initiatives programs by using indigenous voluntary association such as ekub, iddir and mahber to appreciate self supporting program.
