Causes And Consequences Of Migration To South Africa: The Case Of Migrant Returnee Of Hosanna And Sheshego Woreda

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine migrants’ awareness, attitudes and practices in relation to migration, its drivers and its associated protection risks on Ethiopian returnees from South Africa and provide a baseline set of information for the concerned bodies in the study area. To achieve this purpose, descriptive survey design was employed. To conduct the study, both qualitative and quantitative method was employed. Purposive sampling technique was employed and primary data was collected by means of structured questionnaires and interviews. In this case the total participants of the study for survey were 35 males, for FGD 9 peoples from concerned bodies and for key informant interviews 3 participants from Hadiya zonal social affairs, Hadiya zonal youth and sport commission and Hadiya Zonal Red Cross society’s manager were selected purposely. Data were collected through questionnaire and interview. Pilot study was conducted on 10 transitory respondents found in Addis Abba around (especial area called Gotera). Data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Result revealed that many individuals were migrated to South Africa for the purpose of looking for job opportunity and better payment, land degradation, than for academic, political and recreational purpose. Hosanna and sheshego migrants were influenced by false promised brokers followed by their friends, their family and social factors (environmental factors (i.e. seeing life improvement of some returnees), respectively. On the other hand, migration resulted in loss of life, family crisis, loss of productive man power, loss of even human right. Migrants are almost all participated in unskilled labor such as shopping, shoe shining, cleaning kitchen utensils and parking. Migration has the impact on the countries of origin :Loss of life of citizen ,Loss of productive man power, Leads to family disintegration, Loss of human right ( if migration is illegal),Negatively affects one’s countries sovergnity. Practical implications of the findings were presented in the study. Finally, recommendations were forwarded based on the major findings so as to minimize causes of migration and maximize to leave and work in their country.
