Investigating Road Traffic Accident Black Spot Using Qgis A Case Of Addis Ababa, Adama Expressway

Abstract

Globally, road traffic accidents are the leading causes of death among young people in general. Currently studies show that road traffic accidents in Ethiopia specifically in Addis Ababa, Adama expressway are pressing problems. The number of fatalities, injuries, property damage and economic as well as social lose is increasing from time to time. The aim of the study is to investigating traffic accident black spots and examine possible causes of the road accident of Addis Ababa, Adama expressway from July 2019 to July 2022. The methods and procedures used in gathering the study data from the records or reports of Ethiopian toll roads enterprise road safety department. Besides, point based traffic accident sites were collected using handheld GPS devices and import into excel Comma separated value (CSV) file software via Expert GPS then export to QGIS 3.16. Both qualitative and empirical research methods were used to assess the traffic accident level of this road. Black spot identification and traffic accident model development was the focus of this research. Black spot analysis was made using accident severity value. Binary logistic regression model was used for assessing factors contributing for road accident. Finally, black spot segment and road traffic accident severity index were mapped using spatial analyst tools of QGIS. The findings of the study shows that there are eleven black spot segments along the road from Addis Ababa to Adama. The study also indicated that age, education, direction and surface condition play significant role in the determination of road traffic accident injury where p-value less than 0.05. In conclusion, the study revealed that the stated factors have contributed for the occurrence of traffic accidents on the expressway. On the other hand, other factors other than Direction of carriageway, Road surface condition, age of driver and Education seem to have no significant effect on the determination of accident injury on the road. Based on the results the study it is possible to recommend that several remedial measures and provisions for traffic safety are suggested for reducing the risk of accidents in black spots segment areas.
