Abstract

This research analyzes the public transportation hub in Adama City, focusing on challenges, accessibility, inclusivity, and the hub’s impact on the community. Through a detailed examination of the taxi transportation system, several challenges are identified, including limited infrastructure, safety concerns, congestion, and environmental impact. The study highlights that inadequate infrastructure, such as insufficient taxi stops and poorly maintained roads, impedes the efficiency of the service. Additionally, the lack of security measures at the hubs poses safety risks for passengers, exacerbated by traffic congestion and rapid urbanization. From an economic perspective, public transport hubs in Adama City fail to promote economic growth as expected, with issues such as illegal tariff charges and inadequate support for tourism and commerce. The hubs do not enhance property values or stimulate job creation, missing opportunities for smart city development. Socially, the transportation system does not cater to vulnerable groups like the elderly and people with disabilities, who struggle with accessibility due to poor location and design of hubs. The research further addresses the geographical and physical accessibility of these hubs, finding that while the general locations are adequate, their specific placements contribute to traffic congestion and safety hazards. The hubs also lack essential facilities such as shaded areas, cafes, and proper traffic management systems. To improve the transportation hubs in Adama City, the study recommends a multifaceted approach involving better infrastructure investment, enhanced safety measures, strategic hub location planning, and more inclusive design. This would ensure that the hubs serve the community efficiently and contribute to the city’s economic and social development.
