Abstract

Urban green space is any green space of land that is undeveloped and accessible to the public in which influenced by the Rapid urbanization & industrialization phenomenon. Now a time green space planning & management is one of the most crucial elements in healthy and sustainable development process. However due to high rate of industrialization and population within developing cities/towns, the needs of housing and other social infrastructures are increasing from time to time. These all phenomenon causes inadequate green space areas within cities. Therefore the objective of this study was to assess the current status of urban green space planning and management. The study utilized secondary data sources, questionnaires for the households, interviews for official’s expert and managers, as well as personal observations. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected based on survey strategy from a total of 184 sample households from woreda 05, twelve officials and six managers by interviews and observation. So, The study founded that within woreda 05 of Akaki-kality sub city there has too much challenges to full fill the national and international standards of green spaces land use due to inability to enforce rules and regulations according to planning & management practice, unfair distribution, less availabilities of green space and no maintaining of the existed urban green space, financial shortage, professional obstacles during monitoring & evaluation. Even though the city has a few green space planning & management experience among some government sectors rather than to plan UGS, due to this the space is just used for the purpose of industry & informal settlements, As general evaluation the performance of existing green space management practice within the woreda of sub city is very limited in terms of accessibility, distribution, availability, quantity & quality and urban sustainable development senses. Therefore, the study suggest recommendation that the city requires improving the land use plan, should put in place a broad policy framework to facilitate coordination and reduce overlaps, follow the national and international standards of green spaces, use implementation strategies applicability with concerned bodies and adequate and qualified manpower.
