Abstract

This study investigates factors affecting vocabulary learning strategies and use. The study was conducted at Ambo Preparatory School grade 11 students in focus using descriptive survey research design. One hundred and fifty students from the total of 1150 (one thousand, one hundred and fifty) were selected on the basis of systematic random sampling method and five teachers based on available sampling were made participants of the study. The data collecting tools employed were class room observation and interview for teachers. The questionnaire was dispatched to the students. The study found out that students do not have sufficient knowledge to all vocabulary learning strategies equally. Although students have some interest to learn vocabulary, they do not have enough awareness to implement vocabulary learning strategies. Besides, the study found out that teachers do not teach vocabulary learning strategies and their uses to students explicitly and their teaching could hardly say appropriate. The findings also display that teachers do not give any training for students on vocabulary learning strategies. Finally, summary and conclusions were drawn and recommendations were put forwarded to further remedies.
