Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to investigate teachers’ use of visual aids in teaching and learning English vocabulary. The researcher took a sample of grade 8 students and all their English language teachers at Emdiber Junior secondary School in Cheha woreda, Gurage zone. 25 students out of 115 and all English language teachers (2) were participated in the study. Among these 13 students were selected for experimental group and the remaining kept as controlled group. Five research instruments: test, questionnaire, interview, classroom observation and textbook analysis were used to collect the reliable data. The entire subjects filled in the questionnaire, whereas interview was conducted to five students and two teachers. Four vocabulary lessons for four successive periods were observed while teachers were presenting in grade 8. Both experimental and control groups who participated in the study were given a pre-test. After the treatment was given for the experimentalgroup, post-test was employed. Based on the data analysis, it can be seen that there was a significant difference in the result of students’ pre-test and post-test. The average achievement of the students’ pre-test was 49% and 71.52% in the post-test as a whole respectively. The average achievement of the posttest for control group and treatment group was 60.08% and 84.54% respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that students who were learning vocabulary through visual aids were seen well in their vocabulary learning than those who were not learning through visual aids. Moreover, the finding data depicted that almost all of the language teachers were not seen using visual aids to teach vocabularies in a more organized and consistent ways that hindered the students’ vocabulary skills. Finally, based on the research findings necessary conclusion and recommendations were forwarded
