Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the implementation of student-centered approach in teaching speaking skill ,and examine the method teachers use while teaching speaking skill, the participation of students in speaking activities and factors that affect the implementation of active-learning while they were practicing speaking lesson. This study was conducted using qualitative and quantities method of data gathering. It was conducted in Enchin preparatory school, Adea Berga wereda ,West shoa Zone. The data was gathered from 60 grade 11 students and three teachers of Enchin preparatory school. Systematic and purposive samplings were used. The data was analyzed by frequency and percentage. The major finding of the study revealed the problem related to the implementation of active-learning while teaching speaking skill. The theory of activelearning wasn’t implemented in real classroom situations. As it was observed there were factors that affecting the implementation of active-learning in teaching speaking lesson: Teachers emphasis on lecture-method rather than participating students by using activelearning techniques. Teachers and students replied that background of the students and low language proficiency has impact to participate in the classroom activities. As students mentioned in the questionnaire; less participation of students and their number in a class were major problem. In general, based on the major finding, valid recommendations forwarded to all stakeholders.
