Investigation of the factors affecting construction material management practices and its effect on project performance in building construction projects: the case of defense construction enterprise Addis ababa projects

Abstract

Construction material management and proper utilization is an important element in project planning and control, and minimization of waste should be given adequate attention. It is also a vital process which can maximize or minimize the project performance. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors affecting construction material management practices and its effect on project performance in building construction projects: the case of defense construction enterprise Addis Ababa. A comprehensive literature review was carried out to find the factors affecting construction material management process ,the effect of poor construction material management on project perfromance and technioques used to improve construction material maangment in building construction sites. To achieve the intended objectives mixed design method is used . Thus ,a total of 143 questionaries were distributed to construction professionals like project managers , construction engineers , office engineers , site engineers and quantity surveyors working in defense construction neterprise builidning construction sites in and around adis abeba. Descriptive statsiacal analysis and multiple regression analysis were applied by using spss v-26. Under the material planning stage inadequate and incomplete design and specification is the highest ranked factor. Under the material purchasing sub factor time consuming and inefficent procuurement process for cosntruction material is the highest ranked factor. When looking into material storgae and inventory control improper handling of construction materials is the highest ranked factor and finally under the material supply and distribution not enough material quantity inspection verification controlhas is the highest ranked factor..Thefore form the above results it can be concluded that there should be a well organized material management policy and strattegy So, to come up for a deep and detailed academic and practical by companies research of the improvement process in construction material management proves to be necessary in order to orient research developments on this topic.
